Laura MacGowan Barrett is a Ph.D. student specializing in the literature of the British eighteenth century. Her research focuses on how women poets used religion to negotiate the rapidly changing cultural and metaphysical landscapes of the Enlightenment, with particular attention to how they appropriated Biblical narratives to reimagine female subjectivity and effect social change. She is especially interested in the work of Dissenting poet Elizabeth Singer Rowe.
