What We Do
Our program frames all writing—from traditional print-based essays to multimodal content—as fundamentally grounded in ethical questions related to audience, purpose, and context. We invite students to examine their lifelong writing and reading practices through lenses of advocacy and relationship-building, encouraging students to explore the role of writing in their personal, academic, professional, and civic lives. We support this cultivation of writing skills, critical thinking, and rhetorical knowledge primarily through:
- a variety of undergraduate course offerings
- consultations through the University Writing Center
- venues for showcasing exemplary student writing
Our program encourages writers to commit to intellectual honesty, responsiveness to readers, and consideration of other views.

University Writing Center
The Writing Center at the University of Notre Dame is dedicated to helping students become better writers. Our tutors work with writers at all stages of the writing process to help writers express their ideas and construct their arguments. We work with all students from across the University to offer thoughtful feedback through in-person, remote, and specialized tutoring sessions.
